![]() Disposable drapes have consistent quality and are designed to create an impermeable barrier between the patient and surgical field, but their effectiveness can be compromised by fluid or if they become torn. Reusable drapes are said to be fluctuant in their quality although some are waterproof, laundering this can diminish this effect, and it may be necessary to put a plastic sheet or a water‐repellent paper sheet underneath the drapes to protect the patient. The chapter further discusses two types of drapes. There are a number of considerations which practitioners consider when selecting drapes: absorbency and fluid control barrier protection strength conformability comfort and breathability cost and patient factors. The theatre practitioner must take into account a number of steps listed before, during and after draping the surgical patient. The use of surgical draping for patients undergoing an operation is common practice and this chapter discusses the basic principles of draping.
